Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cheryl Howard, Founder of The Berlin Life, located in Berlin, Germany.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm the founder of The Berlin Life, where I help people move to Berlin and find work. I offer guides to life in Berlin, a platform to connect with the local job-seeking community, as well as career coaching sessions to help foreigners navigate the German job market.

Tell us about yourself

I'm Cheryl, a Canadian who moved to Berlin not once but twice. Throughout my time in Germany, I've held various visas and worked for numerous companies (also as a hiring manager). Having been through the job search and visa application process so many times, I know how tough it can be to move to a new country to find work, sort through all of the bureaucracy, and feel isolated and alone. That's why I decided to bring my writing talents (I've long been running a travel blog at cherylhoward.com), coaching skills (that's my day job), and keenness for community building (I've hosted numerous meetups) all into one place. While my business is purely a side hustle, I'm passionate about helping people get settled into Berlin Life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Whenever someone shares that my Berlin Life guides have been helpful or they write to tell me, they found a job!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Learning to find the right balance between having a personal life and pursuing a side hustle. Managing the more tedious aspects of running a business, like accounting, community management, and more.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small, try something, see what works/doesn't work, and adjust as needed. Don't try to be perfect and develop your product or service iteratively.
  2. If there's a way to automate or delegate, do it.
  3. Know when to say no and don't feel bad about it.
