Time to Get to the Root - The Balanced Woman
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hana Miller, Owner of The Balanced Woman, located in San Clemente, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I created a 3-month online program, The Balanced Woman, in order to help women learn how to heal their bodies, master their emotions, and transform their lives with Eastern Medicine and hormonal balancing. I work with women all over the world who come to me for a myriad of needs, from chronic pain and resolving traumatic blockages to a desire to discover their calling in life and cultivate profound and fulfilling relationships.
Tell us about yourself
In 2014, I felt lost. I was depressed, suicidal, heavier than I had ever been, directionless, and disconnected from myself, my relationships, and the world around me. I had been struggling with so many issues since childhood that they became progressively worse in my 20s. My hormones were all over the place. My mood was unstable, and I was unexpectedly fainting multiple times a week. I had been diagnosed with cervical dysplasia and HPV, OCD in the form of dermatillomania, chronic fatigue, migraines, IBS, insomnia, and severe anxiety, not to mention the emotional ramifications of being sexually assaulted.
In short, I was a mess.
I was frustrated, emotionally unavailable, and desperate to find answers. I was studying Western Medicine at the time (my undergraduate degree is in pre-med), and so I began there and saw doctors, specialists, therapists, and nutritionists, tried one diet and exercise regime after another, and spent THOUSANDS of dollars, but nothing produced lasting effects until I focused on healing myself holistically with Eastern Medicine. The primary issue I encountered with Western medicine was that I was constantly relying on other people to help me heal instead of being empowered to heal myself. Doctors visits, prescription drugs, birth control, surgeries….it felt like it would never end.
My health dramatically shifted when I was finally given the individualized and holistic tools, resources, and support I needed to understand my unique health presentation and heal myself. Since 2014, I’ve shed layers of weight, balanced my hormones, worked through my blockages, created new emotional patterns, discovered peace within myself, and found purpose in my life.
I began working with women because, as an acupuncturist, I had one woman after another come to me with physical, emotional, and spiritual imbalances. I felt limited by the geographical confines of my work, so I created my online program so that I could reach women everywhere and empower them to heal themselves!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Every woman I work with feels like a HUGE accomplishment and win. After struggling for so long and feeling like they haven't received the answers, support, or changes they need, I feel immense pride when they finally experience true healing. On a personal note, I felt incredibly proud when my husband was able to leave his job in New York advertising and come work with me instead.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I think that one of the greatest challenges I've encountered thus far was learning how to set clear boundaries between when work ends, and my personal life begins. I love what I do every minute of every day, and even when it's demanding and stressful, it's really hard for me to put my work down and step away.
I work six or seven days a week and run a private acupuncture practice in addition to my online business, and I don't always leave enough time for myself, primarily because my work is what I enjoy most in my life outside of my family.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Take imperfect action and just start! Your offer, your product, or whatever it may be, will never be perfect. It is a disservice to your clients and customers the longer you wait to begin and bring it to market; they need what you have to offer!
- Ensure that what you do is in alignment with who you are. If you don't love what you are doing and connect deeply to your mission and purpose, you will always be looking to move on to the next thing instead of really pouring your heart, time, and energy into making your business the best it can be.
- Be patient. Life is long, and your journey is meant to have many twists and turns. We have a right to our labor but not the fruits of our labor, so find a way to enjoy the moment, be patient with your progress, and find meaning in the day-to-day.
