Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nancy Currie, co-founder of The Bakery, located in Flesherton, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a full-service, old fashion bakery. Our customers are primarily weekend people and tourists. I am a lifelong baker. At one point owned and operated the Thornbury Bakery. I saw an opportunity to provide this community with something that wasn’t here.

Tell us about yourself

Each day was a challenge. Locals were reluctant to come in for a long time. We relied on skiers and summer travel. As 15 years went by things have changed.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We went from renting a very small premise to owning the iconic Richardson Building in Flesherton.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Constant being at work even when you are having a day off. Government is probably the hardest thing to deal with.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

It has to be a passion.

Have a solid business plan with enough money.

Pay yourself.

Anything else you'd like to share?

Everyone thinks they have a great idea. Make sure it’s viable.
