Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dara Carrasco, Founder of The Aubrey Richards Boutique, located in Richmond, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Aubrey Richards is a Lifestyle Pop Up Boutique. We represent something different for each of our customers. For some, we are the boutique you go to for a unique piece; for others, we are where you go for texture and quality. For others, we are where you go for community and body neutrality, a dose of self-love, and a worldly conversation. Our brand is based on my authentic lifestyle. I wouldn't sell what I will not wear or use. I make or source my items from other small business owners, makers, and reputable wholesalers. Aubrey Richards is for every woman.

Tell us about yourself

I have always been entrepreneurial. I have always wanted something. In one way or another, I guess you could say that I have always worked on my business but need the stars to align so that I can take the leap. The funny thing is, the stars never aligned, and Covid made its appearance, and it forced me to ask myself, "If not now, then when," I answered with a resounding "NOW," and I did. It didn't look like what I'd envisioned over time. It looked like what I needed to get me up every day, to allow myself a new identity after being a military brat, a military spouse, a mom, and an educator. I needed something more than ever during a global pandemic. My family motivates me each day. What motivates me is the need to show them another way to be successful, where you make your terms to a certain degree.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is waking up the day after a large event and choosing to come back and love it again. Some are not such pleasant conditions, some not so pleasant people, and some not so pleasant self truths you find when working for yourself. You don't get to confront any of those mentioned above once and repeatedly. Each time, it tests your love and dedication to your business. There are a lot of people who fold. I like to say I flex and pivot. I get my navigation recalibrated and get going.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is wearing all hats. I am the everything at some time. I am the cashier, the order puller, packer, and mail service. I am in charge of finding the resources, the maker, the social media manager - the list seems infinite.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it now because you'll never actually be ready.
  2. Be willing to move slowly and with intention.
  3. Know who you are and keep reminders of that around you.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I get tired but not exhausted. I allowed myself to be devoured by my business one time, and I vowed - never again. There is no love or respect in exhaustion. I believe it can be the killer of all things, especially business. It grows to hate and makes it easy to reject the company you built. Know your limits to help you sustain a healthy business.
