What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own That Copy Girl, an independent digital marketing service offering copywriting, SEO services, and social media consultancy to small and medium businesses.
Tell us about yourself
After years of corporate marketing, I took a break to have my daughter. Back in the day, a full-time marketing career and being a parent simply didn't work for me. When the pandemic hit, and I became without income, I looked into freelancing and working from home, something which the wider world would never have considered if lockdowns didn't happen, I'm sure.
I joined PeoplePerHour and quickly met clients and even a mentor who pushed me to be the best freelancer I could be and continues to do so. What motivates me? Results. I love nothing more than checking a client's rankings and traffic and seeing an organic improvement month on month.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Gaining an international client and ranking her business highly, quicker than I would ever have expected. America is a big place, and gaining page 1 rankings for this client in the first month, really felt like a huge accomplishment.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The uncertainty. In the current climate, nothing is guaranteed, and you can lose a client overnight. Learning to pick yourself and replace the work quickly is a challenge in itself.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't settle. Know your worth and charge it. Cheap clients don't pay your bills, and often they're the ones who expect a lot for a little.
- Don't be afraid to say no. If a client doesn't seem like a good fit, it's unlikely you'll work well together. Also, if a brief they're giving won't work, tell them. It's far better to be honest than for them to blame you for something not working.
- Always be willing to push yourself. If a brief comes in that feels like a stretch, look at it again. Then again. Break it down and look at it step by step rather than as a whole. It may well be that it will be your best project yet.
