What's your business, and who are your customers?
Terra Therapies, PLLC is a mental health group private practice. Our office provides mental health support to all ages, including adults, children, adolescents, families, and couples.
Tell us about yourself
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor, Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, and National Certified Counselor. My counseling career has included agency, school, and private practice mental health support. During my professional experience, I found a passion in working with children and adolescents, however, I realized for young people to find the most success in life, they needed support from parents and caregivers as well. In working with the support systems of young people, I found that adults and families also have many challenges. My joy is working with the entire family system to find healthy, happy, and successful relationships as well as personal success for each individual.
I decided to open my own business in 2015 in Fort Worth, Texas. Very quickly, my caseload grew, and I needed to expand to meet the mental health needs of our community. In 2018, I hired an additional mental health professional. In 2020, our office relocated to a larger office space and hired four more mental health professionals as our business grew.
Today, we employ six fully licensed therapists, three LPC Associates, two Master Level Student Providers, and three Clinical Support Staff. As a supervisor, I have a passion for growing new mental health therapists. The need for mental health support is growing, and we need more professionals to meet the need.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I feel my biggest accomplishment is growing Terra Therapies, PLLC, to be an office to provide compassionate, professional, and ethical mental health support for all who seek our services. We pride ourselves on supporting and encouraging every individual that we serve. Our mental health professionals and clinical support staff are a team that strives to serve our community with integrity.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being a business owner is not for the faint of heart. Many lessons have been learned through trial and error. Finding the balance between being a compassionate therapist and supporting the health of a growing company can be daunting at times. I must remind myself to continually reflect on my personal and professional life balance as well as the work atmosphere and growth of the business.
Finding staff that supports the business model and environment is imperative. Taking time to interview and find the right person for the right position is worth the time invested. It is easy to get lost in the details, however, I have an amazing team that supports and encourages me personally and professionally. We are all invested in the reputation and success of Terra Therapies, PLLC.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
My best advice is to seek out mentors. I have been very fortunate to have professional mentors throughout my counseling career. It is also important to get training and education in business. Unfortunately, I did not learn about business management in my schooling; however, I sought out seminars and classes and researched how to manage and grow my business properly. It is a lot of work, but it is worth the time and financial investment to know your business, inside and out.
Lastly, I think asking for feedback from your clients, customers, and employees is important. Feedback has helped me to navigate changes and growth and improved business success from multiple perspectives. Having an open mind and being open to feedback also allows others to feel valued and satisfied with your business services.
