Broadcast PR Expert - TENXPR
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in public relations but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Samantha Jacobson, Founder and CEO of TENXPR, located in Tenafly, NJ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
TENXPR is a woman-owned broadcast PR agency. We focus on getting corporations, experts, authors, CEOs, founders, and other industry professionals earned media on national, local, and streaming platforms.
Tell us about yourself
Prior to founding TENXPR, I spent over 20 years as a PR professional in the entertainment and media industry before narrowing my focus to broadcast PR. What I love most about my job is the excitement that comes from landing a client a big placement on TV. It feels like I got them the Super Bowl halftime show, and I can’t wait to tell them. Though there’s a lot of hustle and bustle in my job, those moments motivate me every day to do my best for my clients.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
It may sound silly, but my biggest accomplishment was the moment I started saying, “I am a business owner,” with confidence. I had always worked in a corporate environment and had no idea how to start a business, let alone a successful, thriving business. Once I got over that hurdle of starting up, my business gained traction, and I gained more confidence in myself as a business owner. Now, I feel like the luckiest person alive when I tell people I own my own business and get to do what I love.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is finding the balance between life and work. As a business owner and a mother, it’s so important to find the balance, but often there are times when I feel like my business is taking priority over everything else. That’s when I have to reset and recalibrate.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don’t give up. It’s normal to feel defeated in the first few months of starting a business, and there will be moments when you want to throw in the towel, but you have to remind yourself why you started your business in the first place.
- Stay the course. If you have a vision for your business, don’t let other people get you off track with their opinions or unsolicited advice. If people don’t see your vision, surround yourself with new people and stay on track.
- Being uncomfortable means you’re growing. Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone because we only grow when we push ourselves outside of that zone. If you are uncomfortable, it means you are trying something new, and that is a great thing!
