Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Troy LeMaile-Stovall, CEO of TEDCO, located in Columbia, MD, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We support and invest in MD-based early-stage technology-based entities. "Support" means ensuring these firms have all they need for success. "Invest" means to make stage-based investments seeking triple-bottom-line returns (fiscal, jobs, and social). "Early-stage" means as early as the napkin/ideation stage, as we invest at the pre-seed, seed, and venture stage, and "technology-based" means firms that are using technology for innovations in customer experience, value delivery, and/or defensibility of a service/offering.
Tell us about yourself
I am by education an electrical engineer and computer scientist with an MBA. I have worked as an engineer, computer scientist, consultant, venture capitalist, entrepreneur, C-level executive, and board member. What motivates me each day is what my mother told me that we have all been put on this planet for one reason - to make a difference in one person's life - the trick is you don't know who that one person is or when they will come into your life; thus you must make a difference in everyone's life you meet.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have had so many others pour into my life; thus, I must pour into others. Said another way, I am a branch of several trees, and my goal is to help grow other branches. And I know I have done that.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Taking the time to invest in others.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Build a great team.
- Invest in them.
- Get out of their way.
