Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephanie Estey, Co-Founder of TBD Health, located in New York, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
TBD Health is reimagining sexual health. Often, taking care of sexual health is a clinical, stigmatizing experience that leaves so much to be desired. TBD is doing things differently, enabling individuals to live their best sex lives by making sexual health feel human, approachable, and (dare we say it!)…even enjoyable.
TBD is initially focused on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) – and making STI testing and cares more accessible. We have a hybrid approach that leverages at-home, lab-tested Kits – as well as our first IRL experience with our clinic in Las Vegas.
We’ve been primarily DTC but have recently started partnering with entities like universities and employers, for example, that want to offer more accessible, non-judgmental sexual health services to their communities.
Tell us about yourself
Daphne, my co-founder and co-CEO, and I have been friends for over ten years at this point – which is ten years of sex, dating, and relationships. We stumbled through our sexual health together, thankfully – but also felt an urgent, pressing need to make it a better, more approachable experience. This mission, particularly as sexual health becomes more politicized in the US, has never felt or been more important.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
One of my favorite moments was when we first opened up the care hub in Las Vegas. I absolutely loved watching people walk into TBD – and see a complete transformation unfold. Individuals who were nervous, scared, or anxious left TBD smiling –now feeling safe, supported, and proud. The ability to watch this transformation was incredibly inspiring, humbling, and ultimately why we started TBD.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I once heard somewhere that entrepreneurs feel the ups and then also the downs to a crazy degree. I couldn’t agree more. You live, breathe – and deeply feel --- each moment with your company. But, while this rollercoaster is something that’s 100% challenging, it’s also one of the things about being an entrepreneur that I love most.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Trust in yourself.
- Dream big.
- Start.
