Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tazeem Jamal, Founder of Tazeem Jamal, Spa Coaching & Consulting, located in Coquitlam, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a spa biz & marketing coach for solo Spa & Beauty professionals. I am known as the Retail Sales Catalyst, as I love retail!

Tell us about yourself

I am a Master Esthetician & have been in the industry for over 34 years. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a family of entrepreneurs. My parents significantly influenced me & at 21, I opened my spa! When I was working solo, I always found that others in my industry would ask me questions & look to me for advice, which I happily supported. Then about ten years ago, someone asked to hire me to work with them in opening a new salon & so my journey began.

I LOVE marketing & have developed a framework called the "Purple Carpet Experience" that is the core foundation of what I teach. I love working with solos, as it's often a forgotten industry segment. They are often too small to hire a team or outsource marketing, so when they work with me, they get it all! I have guided Estheticians in many ways to expand & build new spaces, move from a home-based studio to building a brick & mortar location, and helped another take on & train a new team member.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So many of my clients have had great success with Retail Sales, growing by up to 40% within six months of working with me. Several new spa owners have pushed beyond six figures in their first year of Coaching with me & a few of them have won awards locally for their work.

I am proud of the "The Best Business Education" award I was honored to receive during Covid for my work to serve my community with complimentary webinars & training support.

As a Biz Coach, in addition to speaking at many conferences, I am a regular contributor to multiple industry magazine publications. This allows me to share my knowledge & experience with the industry as a whole!
I have also been published in many books. Still, one of the most memorable & deeply significant accomplishments was being published in an anthology called 365 Life Shifts, which made it to #1 on Amazon in 8 categories on the first day!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being published in the Book 365 Life Shifts was a considerable milestone on my journey. Through the crash of 2008, I made one of the most difficult decisions about my brick & Mortar location & decided to close the doors after over 20 years! This was a challenging time & the opportunity to be a part of this anthology helped me share my story. Still, more importantly, it allowed me to push through to my (excellent) new chapter in life! Today I know with my deepest being that it was all worth it & I could not be happier to be HERE right now!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Surround yourself with incredible people that have been where you want to go & those that will cheer you on but hold you to the fire when you need it. Accountability helps you get out of your comfort zone & move forward!
  2. Pay yourself from the start, even if it's a little. I often see small business owners struggling to pay themselves because they put every penny back into the business. While that is important, paying yourself consistently allows your biz to grow. Otherwise, you have only bought yourself a job! You did not get into business to do that... When we make money, we can make an impact & give back!
  3. Do what you LOVE & Love what you do. Show up LOUD, give your knowledge to inSPAire {my version of the word} others. When we show up with authentic passion, we get noticed & with that comes opportunities~ I know I have been blessed with many incredible opportunities that have led to abundance & peer recognition!
