Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Taylor Wessel, Founder of Taylored Health LLC, located in Chicago, IL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Taylored Health is an online nutrition coaching business that helps women struggling with burnout, adrenal fatigue, and hypothyroidism rebalance their hormones to increase energy, lose weight and get ahold of sugar cravings once and for all. My customers are women in their late 20s to 50s who:
- are sick of diet culture, calorie counting, and restrictive eating but want to lose weight
- have irregular menstrual cycles
- are always exhausted and want more energy/better sleep
- are busy bees that "don't have time" but want to be healthier/feel better
- have hypothyroidism or adrenal fatigue
Tell us about yourself
I am a wellness junkie that loves everything from a good green smoothie or matcha latte to cold showers and ice plunging! My motivational factor (on a personal level) is to feel good, balanced, vibrant, active, and happy as much as possible professionally. I am driven (and so rewarded by) helping others do the same. My passion for nutrition and wellness started at a very young age as my mother used natural healing modalities on me as a little girl (i.e., a lavender essential oil foot soak for a half-cut-off toe that truthfully needed stitches! And deep breathing paired with LI-4 pressure point work to alleviate headaches). Growing up, especially in high school, I gravitated towards nutrition and fitness, always wanting to learn more, experimenting with different diets and exercise trends, etc. I knew (very early on) that I wanted to be a Nutritionist. I'm grateful that my core belief of "do what you love to do, and the money will come" drove me to follow this proclivity.
After my schooling (which included graduating from the University of Colorado in Boulder with my bachelor's degree in Integrative Physiology, completing a 2-year "master's program" at a small, holistic private school in Denver called Nutrition Therapy Institute, and obtaining a clinical aromatherapy certification), I went on to work (as a Holistic Nutritionist) in health clubs and integrative doctors' offices, plus helped to open a successful wellness center in Hinsdale, IL. After 7 years at the wellness center, I was ready for a new challenge which led me to sign up for a yoga retreat in Costa Rica, hire a business coach, and ultimately get the courage to open my own business, Taylored Health, in 2020!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Aside from helping women regain their confidence and happiness (which is amazingly rewarding), I'd say my biggest accomplishment as a business owner (and former only child who likes to stay safe, cozy, and consistent) is just doing it, aka starting a business! Although it seems glamorous, being an entrepreneur is hard work and not for everyone... in the last 2 years, I've figured out how to make a website, email campaigns, and branded/visually-appealing social media images, launch programs, network, sell my services, make YouTubes and blog articles and make money ALL on my own - that's big growth stuff right there. I literally pinch myself every day for finding a way to make this (my passion) my life's work!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Staying consistent even when new clients, money, and work aren't coming in. This can be incredibly draining, disillusioning and stressful, but I will say gratitude journaling, having a strong support system, and networking with other women entrepreneurs have been SO helpful.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be willing to fail (because you will) and pivot accordingly. Also, realize it's not REAL failure - every "fail" is an opportunity for new growth (on a personal AND professional level).
- Find a strong support system, be it friends, family, a partner/lover, other business owners, etc.
- Journal these three things every morning:
a.) the things you're grateful for
b.) GOALS (short-term and long-term)
c.) your intentions (how you want to show up, be, and contribute to this world)
