Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marie Frohlich, Principal of Taproot Consulting, LLC., located in Williamstown, VT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Taproot Herbals (Marie Frohlich is Soul Proprietor) is a small-scale, Vermont-based herbal botanical company specializing in adaptogenic and self-care medicinal herbal products. Ingredients are grown on the land here in Vermont or sustainably harvested and sourced. My customers are folks seeking ways to adapt to stress and raise their resilience. My byline is "Co-creating Health from the Heart" because I believe in a holistic approach supporting clients and customers with heart-made medicine and herbal and holistic health coaching.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up reveling in nature and was awed by the plant and water community that surrounded me in Indiana and later became a transplant in beautiful Vermont to raise my children and grow greener pastures in our lives. After working as a marketing consultant for Cabot Creamery and traveling to public schools and conferences all over the USA, I became impassioned about food as medicine and ways to support adults and caregivers trying to balance their work-life and family life challenges. This pushed me to become certified as a Holistic Health Coaching and, at the same time, graduate from an advanced Herbal course with Rosemary Gladstar. I have worn many hats at work and as a volunteer in the community, using a variety of skills to support building resilience for the 21st Century.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Developing a brand that has a clear focus on supporting resilience and adaptability with products and coaching, and consulting.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The biggest challenge has been finding unique ways to market my products and me through various online and in-person platforms. A small business owner wears many hats!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find your niche! What is your elevator speech about who you are and why? Don't try to be all things to all people.
  2. Learn to network with local business groups to share your story out loud and get grounded on the best ways to describe what you are selling or offering.
  3. Find opportunities to teach and share what you know to bring people to your door, website, etc.
