Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tanya Tringali, Founder of Mother Wit Maternity & Consulting Services, located in Plantation, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Mother Wit provides wellness services that promote optimal pregnancy outcomes, safe and satisfying birth experiences, and ease the transition into parenthood. We are committed to reducing maternal morbidity and mortality by helping people make lifestyle and healthcare choices that are sustainable and improve their quality of life. We also offer online courses, free resources, and a podcast- The Mother Wit Podcast.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a Certified Nurse Midwife since 2007. I am also a personal trainer, CrossFit Level 1 coach, and Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism coach. Prior to becoming a midwife, I was a Labor & Delivery nurse and, before that, a labor support and postpartum doula. I was inspired to become a midwife after experiencing the magic of midwives when I was pregnant with my daughter back in 2000. I wanted to give people the gift I was given. After 12 years of caring for families, I was ready to take a deeper dive into true wellness and the systemic issues in healthcare that were holding my clients and me back from achieving their goals. So, I stepped away from full-scope practice (i.e., catching babies, gynecological care, etc.) to create Mother Wit, a virtual layer of support where people would feel seen and heard and where we could take all the time needed to focus on the things that matter, commonly lifestyle changes such as nutrition, exercise, sleep, mental health, education, advocacy and so much more.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My proudest moments are the tiny moments. I am enormously proud of the space I have created for women and birthing people to feel seen and heard. Every time a client or former client sends me an update on their life and shares the positive impact the work we did together had on them, their families, and their children, I am motivated to keep pushing forward and innovating.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

We are not taught business skills in nursing or midwifery school, so it takes an enormous leap of faith and a lot of learning to figure out things that others might consider basic skills. From there, I think all entrepreneurs, especially women, face imposter syndrome and fear failure.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Finding networks of like-minded individuals with similar goals and struggles has been key to staying on track and being successful. Asking for help when you need it from business support services such as SCORE and other nonprofits, and my best advice is to join a start-up accelerator like the one I was a part of back in 2018-2019, Propeller.
