Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tanya Mitra, Self-Rediscovery Life Coach based in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m Tanya, self-rediscovery coach and founder of Your EMPOWERED Evolution. I work specifically with Women of Color and Women of Immigrant Descent who feel stuck and are struggling to connect to their deeper truth and create what they really desire in their lives. Working with me, women who are struggling with personal inauthenticity, limiting belief systems, and lack of fulfillment and purpose, overcome misguiding mindsets, buried insecurities, the pressure of societal + cultural expectation, ineffective habits, and fear of change. Together, we re-discover their truth. They gain the courage, confidence, and clarity to evolve, empowered with deep self-awareness, to create the change they want + need in their lives.

Tell us about yourself

When I left my 15+ year career as an executive in luxury fashion, I thought long and hard about my purpose, who I wanted to serve, and how I wanted to use my gifts and talents in the world while still continuing to grow and learn. The answer was clear. As an Indian-Canadian-American, supporting other WOC and Women of Immigrant Descent in leaving behind years of a scarcity mindset, limiting beliefs, and lack of self-worth, helping them navigate through hard life changes, re-building self-love and self-confidence, and embracing belief in themselves and what's possible for them, is the fire that motivates me to continue every day, no matter how hard entrepreneurship gets. Seeing women walk farther and wade deeper into their power and their greatness and helping change their lives in ways that they didn't think was possible is 100% my WHY.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is in the incredible results that I see my clients create in their lives, which inspires me to continuously work to strengthen my skills and abilities as a coach. Outside of that, my biggest accomplishment has been in creating and growing my free workshop, Coaching + Cocktails. It is an hour-long, monthly workshop for women who want more insight into what life coaching is and how it works and are interested in exploring a deeper growth journey. But beyond that, it serves as a safe and private forum for conversation and connection for a community of women that are often underrepresented and underserved, especially in the wellness space.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a solopreneur, it's been a steep learning curve to manage time, energy, and resources in my business effectively while creating harmony with my personal life. The assumption that entrepreneurship is full of freedom, flexibility, and fun is only part of the reality. The truth, especially for a service-based business, is that you literally wear all the hats finance, operations, customer service, sales, marketing, content creation, on top of the actual client work. So, finding a way to structure your days most productively and efficiently is definitely a challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't do what you think you should do or what others think you should do. Search deep within yourself and discover how you'd really like to serve this world, who you'd like to serve and why. Create your business from that place.
  2. Stay committed. It will get hard, and there will be a failure. So focus on remembering your WHY. The purpose behind your business, or your 'why,' will help keep you going and focus on your end goals, rather than getting distracted and giving up during the messy middle.
  3. Create an authentic brand with authentic marketing and allow clients to get to know, like, and trust you. The magic of entrepreneurship is that nobody else is you. The more authentically you communicate your brand story share who you are and why you do what you do, the more you will draw the right clients directly to you.
