Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tanis Saucier, owner of Tanis Saucier Photography, located in Saint Sauveur, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am in the business of creating photographic images of new beginnings, whether that is with moms and dads as they cuddle their sweet newborn baby, with a toddler who is learning to stand, or with a woman who is embarking on a new career path. I work with people who want to hire a professional photographer to capture authentic and stunning images that they will enjoy and want to share and show off. I serve people who live in and around the quaint village of Saint Sauveur in the Laurentians of Québec.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up in a family of Seven. Seven girls, to be exact! As the baby of the family, I have exactly 0 photographs of me before the age of 2. I started dabbling in photography 14 years ago when my first son was born, and I was hooked! I began my never-ending journey for the love of learning about lighting, posing, technique, editing, and serving my clients. I have run a successful Portrait Photography Studio since 2012 and am currently located in the Québec Laurentians. I am motivated because I know what my work can do. It can make time stand still, and that is magic to me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is surviving setbacks (pandemic anyone?) and pursuing a life filled with personal satisfaction, creativity, and autonomy.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a photographer, the hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is the business side of things. Keeping spreadsheets, marketing my business, designing promotions, social media management, maintaining client workflows, scheduling, and website analytics. Oh, if only all I did was take pretty pictures!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I recommend that entrepreneurs take actionable steps to create legitimate businesses (register your business, get necessary insurance, set up your taxes, bank accounts, etc.), which starts the ball rolling. Research similar businesses to get an idea of potential income, expenses, and taxes, and run the numbers to see what you need to survive while you navigate the first years of your business. Finally, talk nicely to yourself! You are the boss, so pump yourself up, be your own personal cheerleader and take breaks to recharge and think outside of the business so you can come back with a fresh perspective and carry on.
