Balance of Strength and Freedom - Tangerine Yoga

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laura Adelson, owner of Tangerine Yoga, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Tangerine is a kickass community in Brooklyn where people can wind down, connect with others, and enjoy a playful yoga practice powered by the teachers.

We empower our teachers to lead a practice that is unique and true to their own style, providing experiences for every student — whether novice, intermediate, or experienced. Coming from various disciplines and backgrounds, our teachers are the heart and soul of Tangerine.

We offer a variety of heated classes (to around 90 degrees) and non-heated classes, emphasizing the flow of breath while creating a balance of strength and freedom in poses.

Tell us about yourself

I started working at the front desk of Tangerine in 2017. Tangerine was the first place that I practiced yoga and experienced community - it became a home away from home for me. During the pandemic, the staff got an email that Tangerine would stop virtual classes and shut down indefinitely. I couldn't bear seeing Tangerine go, so my husband and I started running the business in October 2021.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is keeping Tangerine Yoga going during the pandemic. This is an extremely challenging time for small businesses, and I'm proud that we've safely kept the door open and the lights on for our students, teachers, and staff.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Owning a small business means you have to do whatever it takes to get things done. A bigger company might be able to hire specialists for different tasks, but as a small business owner, I often end up figuring it out myself on the fly. It can feel daunting, but I'm definitely learning and growing!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you're thinking of starting a business, really consider why you're doing it. Think about your values and what brings you meaning and purpose.
  2. Start a business that helps you feel fulfilled outside of monetary compensation.
  3. Incorporate your values into the business so that you, your staff, and your customers are clear on what you stand for.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I'm getting a Master of Science in Yoga Therapy and will graduate in July. I'm looking forward to opening a second location that can focus on yoga therapy - working with people with cancer is my passion and why I went back to school.
