Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tana Lynn, an artist based in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am an artist, and my patrons are lovers of the arts.
Tell us about yourself
A self-taught Canadian artist living in Vancouver, B.C. My visual eye comes from being a makeup artist in the film industry, in which I have been painting famous faces for 17 years. I first picked up a paintbrush while going through a difficult time in my life and needed a way to work through my emotions. My first painting was a Buddha face that brought me so much joy I felt like the process had healed my soul, so I had to keep exploring. I started working with acrylic paints, and I have been dabbling with oils as well. Painting allows me to reach into that world of unconscious emotion, memories, and thoughts. The joy that my work brings to my collectors is what motivates me every day; to know that I can stir emotions and bring happiness is all I need to keep me going.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accompaniment so far was having my work shown in Zurich.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
For me, the business aspects of making money off my art marketing, promotion, pricing, selling skills, import/export, etc., are the hard part.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Learn all aspects of marketing and promotion, art is a business, and you sometimes spend more time on the business side than the creating aspect.
