Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tammy Harris, Founder of Tammy's Teachings, LLC., located in San Diego, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Tammy’s Teachings encourages and supports parents to prioritize the right goals, so they don’t waste time on things that won’t matter ten years from now. We help parents of school-age children feel confident and in control of their parenting choices through online courses, coaching, and free resources.
Tell us about yourself
In a way, I’m your stereotypical San Diego native. In my spare time (what’s that?) I love to read, write, draw, and catch beautiful sunsets with a camera in hand. After 30 years as a teacher, education leader, and parent, I’ve learned practical research-based foundations for modern parents trying to navigate a world that looks nothing like the one in which they grew up. I’m an expert on how to adapt parenting in ways that best meet children’s needs, with fewer power struggles, and most importantly, ensure kids thrive in every situation. I teach parents how to love the child they have rather than the child they imagined. Most importantly, my husband of 30+ years (yikes) and I are proud parents of two adult children. Jacob and Alex both graduated from out-of-state universities and are currently pursuing their career goals.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As a parent and teacher, I’m uniquely qualified to support modern parents and their children’s success in school. I’m a National Board Certified Teacher and District Teacher of the Year, I taught special and general education, and I hold a Master’s Degree in Special Education. My biggest accomplishment will always be helping families find ways to support their children while building and maintaining healthy relationships. Learning how to work with children, rather than trying to control them, allows parents to release their exhaustion and embrace the present. There is no bigger gift I can give families.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Among the many challenges of being a business owner, one that comes to mind is battling the common misconceptions of what it takes to build a business as a solopreneur. I’m often asked what it is I do all day. Well, besides writing, researching, keeping up with social media, maintaining my website, creating and marketing courses, coaching parents, and networking, I sometimes cook dinner and clean my house. Just as modern parents are trying to parent in a very different world, entrepreneurs are building businesses with websites and social media instead of traditional brick-and-mortar business models. It can take years to build trust and gain momentum. This requires patience and perseverance.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Know your why. There will be hard days and times when you want to quit. It’s in these moments you have to remember why you show up every day.
- Be a learner. Read books, listen to podcasts, take classes, and learn your craft.
- Failing is not the same as being a failure. The most successful people and businesses survived numerous failures. What sets them apart from those who didn’t succeed is how they got up when they were down. Failure is not about losing, nor is it permanent. It’s about learning.
