Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tammy Olson, Owner of Tammy Olson Consulting, located in Mahtomedi, MN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My consultancy helps small business owners refine their processes, optimize their tools, and implement new platforms to create sustainable and scalable growth for their unique organizations. I work with remodeling, construction, landscaping, and other service-based business owners who want to take control and run their businesses without chaos and drama.

Tell us about yourself

I began working with small businesses, providing strategic advisory and accountability support by applying the business acumen gained during my many years in corporate roles. I am grateful to my clients for their business because I contribute a percentage of my profit to organizations that support animal rescue and wildlife conservation. I am motivated by being able to provide financial and volunteer support to these organizations.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been the freedom to fully leverage my strengths to serve my clients. I enjoy helping my clients streamline their "behind the scenes" back-office operations by first understanding their overarching business objectives and then creating the framework that will support those objectives.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is also one of the best. It's all on me. Whether my business is successful or not, I am at the helm. If something isn't working, it's up to me to figure it out. Fortunately, I have cultivated a great support network of trusted advisors who I call upon when I need an outside perspective.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a plan but don't wait to get started until you've figured every single thing out. You're going to have to take a blind leap, or you'll never even start.
  2. Be willing to figure things out.
  3. Know when to ask for help, but the ultimate decisions in your business are yours to make.
