A more relatable coffee- Tales Coffee

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coffee but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Eric, owner and founder of Tales Coffee, located in Vancouver, BC.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We're a coffee roaster that sells high quality coffee beans and brewing equipment. Our customers range from brand new coffee drinks to real enthusiasts. We wanted to make coffee more accessible for newcomers and describe our coffees with feelings and emotions instead of overwhelming them with tasting notes, origin and altitude.

Tell us about yourself

I hate to admit it but I started off as a consumer drinking fast food coffee. Now I'm not saying there's anything wrong with this but there is a noticeable difference between specialty coffee and fast food coffee. When I first started learning about coffee it was extremely overwhelming, even looking at coffee bags they have way too many descriptors for me to understand what any of it means. This is why I wanted to create a business that makes it easier, and more relatable so people won't feel overwhelmed and turn away from coffee.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think the biggest accomplishment is not going out of business. Aside from that the growth of our Youtube channel Tales Coffee is something I'm extremely proud of. We put out guides and reviews weekly to help people ease into coffee and help them brew a great cup at the comfort of their own home.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's hard to know if you did the right thing or making the right decision. A lot of the decisions made as a business owner don't see immediate results and the stress of that really eats at your confidence level. So, whatever decision you make you have to have full conviction and not let it eat at you when it's not working out immediately.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Don't be afraid and try everything you think of because you'll never know what works. Focus on creating attention to your brand. Make sure you enjoy it and have a lot of fun. Bonus tip: get a good accountant when the time comes.
