Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Rudolph, Owner of Take Paws Madison, located in McFarland, WI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a professional pet care service company. We specialize in dog and cat care. Dog walks, dog boarding, cat visits, and dog behavioral training. Our wonderful customers are people that love their pets and want the best care for them while they are working (dog walks) and while they are away on vacations or trips (dog boarding & cat care).
Tell us about yourself
I have always loved dogs and all animals, so I decided to become a dog behaviorist and dedicate my life to helping people find a better balance with their dogs. I also love exercise, so the idea of getting to walk dogs each day and be in nature was something I was very drawn to. What motivates me each day is that I get to be with dogs and animals that are in the moment; they are not thinking about yesterday or tomorrow... they are in the moment of right now, and it helps to keep me at the moment as well. I truly love what I get to do each day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would say my most significant accomplishment as a business owner is hiring the best staff in Madison. Take Paws prides itself on only hiring and having the best and most educated and motivated professional pet care staff. These are people that want pet care to be their full-time or part-time career.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Juggling everything that is going on, trying to be hands-on, but also letting everyone do their thing and trying not to micro-manage.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Communication - communication with clients and staff is key. Professional and open communication with everyone.
- Listen - listen to your clients and staff. Be there for them in a professional manner.
- Love your job - be passionate. If you are starting a business, don't do it for the money you think you will make, do it for the passion you have for what you want to do.
