Making Video Accessible for All - Tabrizi Productions

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in content creation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Farran Tabrizi, owner of Tabrizi Productions, located in San Jose, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Tabrizi Productions is a full-service boutique video production serving the San Francisco Bay Area. My customers range from female founders looking to tell their stories to non-profits such as Second Harvest Food Bank and growing companies looking to build their video presence for recruiting efforts.

Tell us about yourself

I have been doing videos for 20 years now. It all started with my side hustle doing event video production while in college. After graduating with a bachelor's in Broadcast Radio and TV (right around the time YouTube was born), I began working for various tech startups, building and producing their video platforms. In 2014 I decided to turn my side hustle into my full-time career, and that's where I am today. What motivates me each day is the people. I get to meet new creators and innovators each month and help them tell their stories. It's like having a backstage pass to the inner workings of each organization I help.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Above any accolades or recognition, I would have to say being a mother and a business owner. It's not easy, and maybe that is why it feels like my biggest accomplishment. But it allowed me to have a flexible schedule and to be home when I needed to for my family. It's also taught me a lot about myself as a person and what I'm capable of. The funny thing is my revenue actually had a major uptick after becoming a mom.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Probably setting boundaries. It's easy in this line of work (and when working for yourself) to take anything you can get. Follow the money (and believe me, I did). But when you set boundaries and only say yes to the projects that truly call to you is when you are most fulfilled, and the work doesn't seem like work anymore.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just do it. Start the process even if you're just easing in or making it a side hustle.
  2. Find a good business podcast that you can relate to (there are tons out there). It's a free resource that will give you a lot of the tools you need to get started.
  3. Network, network, network. Also, pick one platform to market what you do on and get really good at that one. So many business owners I know try to show up everywhere, which inevitably burns them out. Find one place your audience likes to hang out and nurture that.
