It's All About Your Body - Swing Lab Performance & Therapy

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michele Liew, founder and owner of Swing Lab Performance & Therapy, located in Richmond Hill, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We specialize in golf biomechanics, and our services range from injury rehabilitation to performance enhancement to help golfers utilize their body more efficiently and enjoy the game & play better! We work with golfers of all ages and levels who want to understand how their bodies are utilized to help them move better and more efficiently through the swing!

Tell us about yourself

I was a former competitive golfer when I was younger. Still, I ended up with some serious injuries by 17 years old from poor mechanics. Hence, I had to quit golf completely due to the injuries. I couldn’t find an answer to why and how I could get better. So I decided to pursue my studies in sports medicine and golf biomechanics which led me to start this business with the goal to help golfers play pain-free golf and improve performance! My favourite part of building this business is that I get to meet people from all different backgrounds and levels of golf but with the same goal of playing better. So it is very rewarding when we start to see golfers improve, and that keeps me going every day!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say it wasn't easy to build this up as a female in a male dominant industry. Still, I'm glad I kept it going, and I'm glad to be able to help the golfers along the way, and their support means a lot to me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Learning how to run a business while also being a good clinical practitioner. It’s about finding time to balance both sides, so I don’t leave out one or the other.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find something you love/passionate about.
  2. Don’t be afraid to be a niche; that’s what sets you apart.
  3. Give 120% to your work; when the work is good, it will speak for itself.
