Methodical Approach to Keep You Doing What You Love - Swell

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nia Xytakis, Co-Owner of Swell, LLC., located in Wailuku, HI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is the first sole-health coaching company on Maui, geared towards people who partake in paddle sports, whether that's surfing, swimming, canoe paddling, or stand-up paddling. Health coaching is an evolving field; I use your expertise in your life, behavior science, and positive psychology to tailor goals to your unique life to keep you doing what you love but better.

Tell us about yourself

I started working on my business after completing my health coaching certification and behavior change specialization. My intention was to work as a remote health coach, but a lot of the companies weren't hiring people in Hawaii, and Hawaii hasn't implemented health coaching into their healthcare system. Through my day job as a swim coach, I became a professional lifeguard, and that really inspired me to focus my company on water people. My love of all things water, my desire to surf forever, and my belief that being on the water makes us better people motivate me each day to do what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I started my business in January 2022, so it's still pretty young. My biggest accomplishment thus far is going about the process at a strategic and slow pace. I'm enjoying every phase and learning a lot. My biggest accomplishment is not getting ahead of myself and being methodical.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is getting some momentum. Consistency is key, especially when it seems like no one cares or is paying attention. Celebrate the little wins.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Most people quit their day job way too early; don't do it.
  2. Legally, have everything set up properly before taking clients or doing business. It's just not worth it.
  3. Reach out to people, and have fun with it!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I'm a woman-owned business making waves in the Pacific.
