Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Vorm, co-founder of Sweet Treat without Wheat, located in Des Moines, IA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sweet Treat without Wheat is an in-home bakery that bakes up delectable gluten-free goodies. The gluten-free community in Des Moines is full of the most amazing people in the world, and they deserve the best food! What's the point of eating food that doesn't make you do a happy dance?

Tell us about yourself

Gluten-free entered our world during an extremely busy season- we moved 1600 miles & started fostering 12 children while parenting our two biological kids. Our oldest went off gluten to see if it helped with some health issues & for the 1st time in her life, she wasn't dizzy. The gluten-free food found in grocery stores wasn't her favorite, so we worked at switching our family recipes to fit her needs. Fast forward 18 months & we were back in Des Moines & a friend with Celiac mentioned we should have a booth at the Downtown Farmers market {#2 market in the nation!} That was 2013. We've been baking up goodies for our community ever since. We believe everyone deserves good food.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We're proud of our work at STWW & extremely grateful for all our amazing customers. While there have been a few other gluten-free bakeries in our community, I'm thankful for our longevity - again, thanks to our amazing customers!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Providing delicious food brings us great joy! As a female business owner, I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling like keeping all the spinning plates in the air isn't always easy, but daily I remind myself- how would you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. It's a weird analogy, but it helps me accomplish one thing at a time. The seemingly insurmountable work gets broken down & accomplished without making me feel overwhelmed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start around something you love & are passionate about.
  2. It's okay to start small. Organic growth is seen over time & it is extremely rewarding to see growth.
  3. Surround yourself with good people. Having a crew cheering you on is priceless.
