Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in branding and marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Caro Buermann, Founder of Sweet Streets, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sweet Streets is a boutique creative consulting firm with a focus on girls' brands. We manage a talented pool of artists, curate their artwork and projects, and help them develop their own brands. Even though we are proud to offer a platform for female artists, I believe our customers are everyone.

Tell us about yourself

I believe we are defined by the people we keep around us. I have always surrounded myself with creatives and people with a passion for what they do. I'm very lucky to have mentors in this space, and other curators, who give me advice and support me. I credit Hikari Shimoda, who I now manage and who is very philosophical and who helped me to look at the world beyond the perspective of art. I think you need to be able to do both in this field. Curators do this job because we are passionate about art and we love meeting new artists. Ask questions, work hard, be kind, and you will get there. I have this saying, "Don't follow your dreams; follow your effort." Dreams don't work unless you do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We just launched the 40th Anniversary line of The Last Unicorn, and that was a huge accomplishment. With any show that I curate or brand that we develop, I always want to engage the audience and open their mind to new ideas and enjoy what they're looking at. Audiences have so many options when it comes to their entertainment, and it is up to us to make sure we are evolving - while also having some fun.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

What I love and what I find challenging is always the same, and that is, there is no such thing as a typical day. One of the toughest parts of my job as a business owner is having to say "no." Sometimes, a project just isn't the right fit or doesn't align with our current plans or budget. It gives me something to circle back to. You have to look at the big picture constantly.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Ask questions, work hard, be kind, and you will get there. I have this saying, "Don't follow your dreams; follow your effort." Dreams don't work unless you do.
