What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a full-spectrum doula who supports people through all aspects of reproductive healthcare and decision-making. Most often, I support people through pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. I'm also a newborn care specialist and certified lactation counselor.

Tell us about yourself

I have always loved taking care of babies and helping new parents. I come from a large family, so birth, postpartum, lactation, and newborn care are like native languages for me. I'm motivated each day to do this work by seeing my clients gain confidence as they learn to trust themselves in their reproductive and parenting journeys.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is creating this successful business from scratch in a new-to-me town where I didn't know anybody. I moved to San Diego in 2021 as an empty-nester, and Sweet Peas has been my focus since arriving here.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being seen on social media, putting myself and my expertise out into the world to be evaluated and critiqued. Being consistent with bookkeeping and the back-end things that are not client-facing but just as important to stay on top of.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Hire a good attorney who understands the ins and outs of starting a small business in the state of California! Doing this saved me from making costly mistakes.
