Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Fohr, Founder and CEO of Sweater Hound, located in Brandon, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sweater Hound makes custom one-of-a-kind knitted blankets, pillows, and sweaters featuring your pet. We hand draw every image and send it to you for review before moving to production. All are made in the USA.

Tell us about yourself

My business was started out of my love for my dog Harley. I was working in fashion and noticed the trend of cute dogs on sweaters and thought, how cute would my dog Harley be on a sweater? However, Harley was a mixed breed of a dog that didn't look like many other dogs. This sparked the idea of putting your own pet on a sweater made just for you!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Sweater Hound has been creating products for four years now, and every day I love that I am making products for customers that remind them of their pets. I've had many celebrities and TV shows showcase my products, but my favorite was being on Oprah's Favorite Things.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Working for yourself is tough. You have to be everything for the business. I've found that finding mentorship and groups to collaborate with have been super helpful.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Love the idea or product because, at times, you may not love parts of the business, but if you love the vision or product, you will go further.
  2. Ask for help. I am constantly asking others for help because, as a team of one, I know I cannot do it all.
  3. Work hard but also take breaks and prioritize your family and friends.
