Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jannet Truong, Owner of Sway Nails & Spa, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Sway Nails & Spa is a reasonably priced upscale nail salon where service quality will exceed your expectations. We offer all types of services, including multiple types of pedicures, manicures, nail extensions, nail art, and waxing. Most of our customers are families residing in the lovely neighbourhood of Roncesvalles. Men, women, and even children come through our doors regularly. However, people travel from as far as Brampton or Leslieville to have their needs met.
Tell us about yourself
I first started doing nails when I was still a teenager. The joy of letting my creativity come to life in my client's hands, bringing them a lasting confidence boost, quickly became a passion. While our industry tends to be mostly fast-paced, we noticed a need for genuine care and attention to detail when it comes to pampering customers. Offering the perfect escape from the city noise and a true opportunity to relax and be taken care of by Torontonians is what motivates us each day. As new clients become regulars, we literally witness their glow-up.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
We have many achievements under our belt, but our biggest accomplishment has to be the survival of the most recent health crisis. It happened only a few months following our grand opening, which is far from optimal for a first year in business. Thanks to the quality of our team, which brought the love and outstanding support of the Ronces neighbourhood, we were able to make it through and are now stronger than ever.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Being a business owner comes with its fair share of obstacles. As a couple, one of the hardest things had to be balancing business ownership with our love life. There was a learning curve, but after some time, things started falling into place. You figure out how to divide the tasks according to your individual strengths. You learn to respect and appreciate date nights by keeping your mind off of work. You also start realising the value of taking the time to go on a peaceful retreat away from the city every once in a while to recharge your batteries. With that being said, working together towards the same goal, towards the same vision is also one of the best things about balancing business ownership with your love life.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Jump. If you wait until you're ready, you'll never start.
- Don't tell your friends about your plans. Surprise them with your results.
- Have a cushion in the bank. New business often surpasses their startup budget.
