Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Vander Heiden, Founder of SVH Creative, located in Pewaukee, WI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is SVH Creative, a freelance writing service. I step in for smaller marketing agencies and companies that may not have a dedicated writer on staff or are overwhelmed with projects. I offer copywriting, ghostwriting, editing, blogging, and more. I believe every business could use my services in one way or another.
Tell us about yourself
I’ve always sought creative outlets for things that interested me, like movies, sports, or entrepreneurship. I sort of combined all of that into a blog purely for fun but offers started coming in for partnerships, and getting that first Google Adsense check was really inspiring. There was clearly a market for my creative services.
I find it so satisfying to earn the trust of businesses and help them reach their goals through strong customer service and, of course, killer copywriting. I love meeting new people and getting the opportunity to learn about different industries. Just recently, I worked on a project related to artificial intelligence and another for survivalists – completely unrelated but equally fascinating. It’s like getting paid to learn.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would say my biggest accomplishment as an owner is operating every aspect of the business. Having a history in creative marketing taught me how to put up a brand, and I was more than willing to learn and try everything else I didn’t know. I just find the whole process and adventure of running a business a lot of fun. It makes it easier to give every client the best service I am capable of every time – no matter the size of the job or business I’m helping. The reviews and feedback so far have been amazing.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Having a business takes so much self-motivation. When times get tough or confusing, you may feel you have nowhere to turn. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help through a mentor or someone in your network. There is a lot of generosity out there. Most people are more than willing to help if what you’re asking doesn’t take a lot of time and you are genuinely appreciative. And hey, there are endless free resources to learn and stay motivated (like the website you’re reading now!).
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- To start a business, commit to one realistic goal, like a single sale. It will validate your idea and help you learn how to get better the next time.
- To run a business, dedicate some time each day to studying others who are doing it better. Write down your notes and how you might tailor those ideas to your business.
- To grow a business, put your best foot forward every time and wait for repeat business and referrals. Good things will happen.
