Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Suzanne Taluy, Founder of Embrace Psychotherapy LLC., located in Norwalk, CT, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Embrace Psychotherapy is a private therapy practice that provides mental health treatment to individuals, families, and couples. I focus primarily on trauma and anxiety disorders and everything under that umbrella, including panic disorders, mood disorders, and addiction. The clients who seek my services have experienced trauma and struggle with anxiety and depression. They often have relationship issues as a result of their mental health issues, or the issues in their relationships are impacting their mental health. I work with Teens who are looking for coping skills to manage their anxiety and navigate their social lives. I also provide support to those who are struggling with addiction; they are usually in recovery and need help maintaining their sobriety.
Tell us about yourself
Ever since I was a child, I knew that I wanted to help people in some way, shape, or form. I became interested in psychology as a teenager and decided to major in psychology in college. Around my Junior year of college, I wasn't sure how far I wanted to pursue psychology as a career, and I talked to my advisor, who recommended Social Work. So I went and pursued my master's in social work and fell in love with the profession. I became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Connecticut so that I could provide individual therapy, and I love helping people on a micro level. I am motivated by my passion for helping people and making a change.
I get to see how my work is making a difference in people's lives. Every now and then, a client gives me positive feedback, and that really drives me to keep going. I have also done a lot of healing of my own through the things that I have learned as a professional and in my interactions with different clients.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is the success of my business and the ability to do what I love to do every day while being able to provide for my family and sustain a decent lifestyle. I am in my dream career, and I have so much gratitude to the universe for allowing me to do this.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is having sole responsibility for everything and having to wear many hats. I handle all aspects of the business, including marketing, billing, and doing client intakes. You have to make sure that these things are being managed well because it is the foundation of the business's success.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do your research about the business. I worked for a group practice before I decided to start my own private practice, so I had a basic understanding of how to run my own therapy practice.
- Network, Network Network. It is important the utilize platforms like Facebook and Linkedin. Attend networking events and talk to other people who have experience in the business. Sometimes running a business can be isolating, and networking allows you to establish connections so you can feel supported.
- Be Patient. When you start a business, it's going to go slow, and you are not going to make money right away. It's important to be patient with the process, and while you have the downtime, really push your brand through marketing and advertising.
