Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Suto, Founder of Sutoscience LLC, located in Phoenix, AZ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Hello, hello! I'm a freelance writer specializing in tech copywriting and memoir ghostwriting. I'm a Swiss army knife and storyteller with a background as a Hollywood TV writer. As a digital nomad, you can find me writing from cities like San Francisco or losing my Airpods (again) in Lisbon. My ideal clients are innovators. I love helping founders and other inspiring individuals tell their stories to the world! You can read more about me on my website.
Tell us about yourself
I started in Hollywood as a TV writer but found that I preferred to travel the world and work for myself. So that's what I do! I'm motivated to help my clients because I know how powerful storytelling can be -- when it's done right, that is.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is that I get to wake up every day and do what I love -- write! Not only that, but I can set my own schedule, see the world, and find inspiration in many different people and places.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Admin work! I'm not a fan of juggling the legal/tax/accounting side of being a business owner, which is why I outsource and get expert support on all this stuff. You can't escape not knowing these things. All business owners need to understand the intricacies of the tax code and the law to run a tight ship and protect their business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start from a place of passion, and find the market that needs your skills. Follow your passion but lead with your mind: not every industry or niche is created equal. You should be doing what you love and are good at, so find a way to provide value that combines those things.
- Self-care is crucial to succeeding in the long run. That means sticking to a regular workout routine, meditating regularly, and reducing stress. Otherwise, you'll be on a path to burnout.
- Learn what you don't know, and hire experts to help you. You can't outsource everything, but you should have advisors and experts to help you navigate the ins and outs of starting your own business. Spend more time honing your strengths rather than just trying to improve your weaknesses!
