Popular Hands-on Sushi Workshop - Sushi Making For The Soul

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food service but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sang Kim, founder of Sushi Making For The Soul, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sushi Making For The Soul specializes in corporate team-building sushi workshops. It started in 2008 as a free sushi class for kids in low-income, high-risk communities to raise awareness about food insecurity and childhood poverty in the Greater Toronto Area. We still do a lot of work with these communities through various non-profit organizations and charitable causes.

Tell us about yourself

I am a chef and restaurateur. I opened my first modern Japanese restaurant in 2004 in Toronto. I have made many mistakes and fallen hard many times, but what motivates me is falling forward and finding creative ways to stand up again.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Giving a TEDx talk about my experience and how Sushi Making For The Soul nourished both me and the communities we have helped over the years.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Not being able to anticipate the rocks along your path that you will inevitably bump into and fall over.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Expect to fall many times, but never name them "failures."
  2. Give back to the community when you feel like your business has nothing to give. It will come back to you a hundred-fold.
  3. Hire people who are smarter than you in areas you think you know everything about.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you hate what you do, leave yesterday.
