Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Susan Shloss, Founder of Money Wisdom Coaching, located in San Rafael, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Certified Money Coach (CMC)®, helping women break through obstacles in their relationship with money. My clients have a spiritual orientation and love the combination of practical, emotional, and metaphysical tools that I bring to the coaching relationship. Many of my clients are creative women who have a love-hate relationship with money. They may have patterns of overspending or underearning, avoidance, or anxiety.
In the money coaching process, we excavate unconscious past imprints that make it hard to change patterns that aren't serving you. Identifying these patterns and their origins brings acceptance and forgiveness to ourselves and the significant adults from our childhood. With that awareness, the dynamics begin to shift. In my group program and online workshops, I create a safe and sacred container that fosters equity, inclusion, and deep healing and empowerment.
Tell us about yourself
I am passionate about supporting women of all backgrounds to finally make the changes they want to make in their relationship with money. My own story is one of healing past trauma so that I could move from "staying small to stay safe" to living a prosperous, abundant life. With more than 20 years in the financial services industry, I have worked as an investment specialist and operations manager at Charles Schwab and built a 6-figure bookkeeping business.
When I finally came to terms with a need to follow my passion for helping people in their transformation process, I got my certification with the Money Coaching Institute, which gave me the tools I needed to open my coaching business. My Music Therapy degree informs my work as a coach and musician. I often bring sound healing with a violin to my events and classes. I bring a longtime study of energy healing, bodywork, yoga, and lifelong meditation practice to support my clients in self-care that I see as the foundation of abundant life.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Something I'm particularly proud of is the Money, Justice, and Spirituality Summit that I put on in March of this year. The 16 interviews with a powerful, diverse group of women were rich and fulfilling!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the most challenging things for me about being a coach is the amount of marketing involved. I've learned to do the next right thing and then let go of the results of my efforts. I've learned to use my intuition more and more to tune into the best actions and words that will attract my ideal clients.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Put your self-care first. We can only be truly effective if we are fully resourced.
- Build your support team and keep tweaking it. Hire coaches, administrative support, and specialists as you are able to, so you're not bogged down with the details and can focus on your message and impact.
- Be clear on your intentions, then take vacations. So much can happen when we unplug from our business and let the magic happen.
