Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in human resources but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Susan Rogers, Founder of Susan Rogers Executive Recruitment & Coaching, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm an executive recruiter who specializes in Corporate/Marketing Communications, Public Affairs, and PR. I love finding that piece of a puzzle that completes a Communications team! I also offer services in career advice/guidance and executive coaching, which is hugely rewarding! I love helping people get through a challenge or move to the next level.
Tell us about yourself
I was in tv broadcasting, and as a reporter, I worked with a lot of media relations/PR people when writing and reporting stories. When I made the decision to take my career in a different direction, I decided to look for work as a PR/Communications professional. Then that search took a twist as, instead of working for a company doing PR/Communications, I ended up being hired by a recruiting firm to find people who have expertise in those service areas and place them with our clients. A couple of years later, I took the big leap of starting my own recruiting business, and I've never looked back.
I have also really enjoyed doing career transition consulting (CTC) with candidates throughout my recruiting career, and a few years ago decided to go one step further and become certified as an Executive Coach. I now offer three services that all relate to helping people either move to the next step in their career or define objectives in their current job. Either way, it's a satisfying business.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Building a business that is 100% referral based, which succeeds because of a reputation based on integrity and commitment.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Staying afloat through tough economic times.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Surround yourself with good people and mentors who can guide you on tough decisions along the way.
- Manage your finances wisely. When business is good, appreciate it, but don't forget the long-term picture. Prepare yourself for the downturns in the market so that when they happen, you're not stressed to the max. You've got a cushion.
- Work with integrity. Don't sell your soul to the devil to get work. If you build it (and do a good job!), they will come. Reputation is everything with a small business, especially if most of your clients are referred. Don't compromise your ethics!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
The flexibility, freedom to answer to no one but yourself, and sense of accomplishment of having your own business are well worth it!
