Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Susan McLaughlin-Beltz, President of Neurodevelopmental Institute of NH, LLC., located in Hooksett, NH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Neurodevelopmental Institute of NH provides outpatient mental health services, neuropsychological evaluations, community-based mental health services, neurofeedback/qeeg, occupational and speech therapy, as well as infrared treatments, esthetics, and yoga through The MindBody Connection to individuals of all ages. Our clients are self-referred, state office referred, hospital referred, and school-district referred. We also have a Montessori preschool (Acorn Montessori) that serves 2.9-6-year-olds.

Tell us about yourself

In 1998, I obtained my Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience from the Boston University School of Medicine. I was then licensed as a psychologist in 2002 and began NINH to serve people of all ages with neurodevelopmental disorders. My three daughters were born while I was in medical school, and each had a different neurodevelopmental disorder. Developing NINH in conjunction with a Montessori school allowed me to provide my children with an education as well as therapeutic services such as speech and OT. Today, all three children are adults and work in the business; they have all attended college and have developed specializations. Because I so firmly believe accurate diagnoses lead to appropriate treatments, I strive to make sure every client that comes through our doors is thoroughly evaluated and receives a team approach to treatment. In April 2022, I also completed my 2-year fellowship in Integrative Health and Medicine, which allows us to offer whole-body health recommendations related to nutrition, natural supplements, and mindfulness. Because we service so many people with developmental disorders, as well as trauma, it is critical that we address the connection between mind and physical health. I love to see people heal and achieve their optimal functioning.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is related to our clients' accomplishments. Every time I see a child who is struggling to maintain placement in their home or school become the child who is happy and functioning in a way no one ever expected, I'm encouraged to learn and provide more to help the next child.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I really don't enjoy the business aspects, such as financials, disciplinary actions, dealing with insurance companies for payment, or the restrictions our current healthcare system places on the services we can offer.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Develop a 5-year business plan and be sure to have input from a financial advisor.
  2. Be sure that you are passionate about the business you are starting,
this will help you persevere through difficult times.
  3. Surround yourself with people who have complementary skills in order to support all the different needs of your business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Everyone has the potential to fulfill their dreams; surround yourself with those who understand your vision and will ride the waves with you.
