Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in art education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Susan Bagrationoff, Owner of Artsy Fartsy Art Lessons, located in Kent, WA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Artsy Fartsy Art Lessons offers individuals ages seven through adult low-cost yet high-quality art classes in the disciplines of drawing and painting. My clients/ students are those who are serious about exploring various ways to express themselves visually.
Tell us about yourself
Since the age of eight, I have always wanted to be an artist and teach art. When I went to college for my bachelor's in fine art, I had a rough experience with a professor at my university who was incredibly derogatory in how he critiqued students' artwork. This experience inspired me to want to open my own art school one day, which would help to build artists in a more positive way. When the opportunity finally arose about ten years later, Artsy Fartsy Art Lessons was born.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Due to the nature of what I do at my art school, inspiring others is my biggest accomplishment. I love when I see a student's eyes light up and they have that "ah ha" moment. When students place their work on my 'Student Art ' wall and point it out to their families, I can see how proud they are of what they have created. This is why I do what I do.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the most difficult things I have discovered as a business own is how many things you DON'T know about owning a business... as first! No matter how much experience you have, you are never truly aware of all the little potential, unique issues that may head your way. When something funky surfaces, find a way to resolve that issue, so things run more smoothly in the future. Owning a business is definitely a learning process, so embrace the journey.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The three things I would suggest to someone wanting to start, run and grow a business are:
One, follow your passion. If you love the business you create, it will show, and you will flourish.
Two, accept feedback. Especially if you are a new business owner, ask and accept feedback from your clients and peers.
Three, go with the flow and have fun! Sure, you can plan and strategize, but it never fully prepares you for how your clients will react. Learn from your experience and enjoy the growth.
