What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sure Dividend is an investment newsletter and research business focused on high-quality dividend growth stocks. We serve investors looking to build their income portfolios for financial freedom and retirement.

Tell us about yourself

I started Sure Dividend in 2014 with the idea that investing in high-quality dividend growth stocks nicely lines up with the needs of many individual investors. The strategy promotes long-term investing, reduces fees, and typically provides growing income over time. I am motivated to continue growing the Sure Dividend audience and our services because I believe financial freedom and retirement are important for personal freedom.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is getting to work with the phenomenal team at Sure Dividend. I'm lucky to work with great people.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Everything ultimately depends on you, especially when you first start. There are no excuses and no fallback.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My top tip would be to think about how you will reach your audience. That's even more important than your product or service. How you will find and connect with your potential customers is critically important.

My second tip would be to not wait. Start building your audience today. You learn so much more by doing than by planning.

My final tip is to focus on building your email list. This is applicable for most businesses and especially online first businesses. Social media platforms wax and wane in popularity, and they often change their algorithms. Your email list, on the other hand, is owned by you. It's a much more reliable asset.

Building your own business is challenging but extremely rewarding. The rewards go beyond the financial. Knowing that you can start and build a business can give you confidence that you can make your own way in the world.
