Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shannon Moroney, Founder of Shannon Moroney & Associates, based in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a ground-breaking mental health and justice practice specializing in supporting survivors of trauma and trafficking to achieve post-traumatic growth. As founder and clinical director, I lead by example: My own story and journey to post-traumatic growth are documented in my national bestselling memoir, Through the Glass. My new book, "Heal for Real: A Guided Journal to forgiving others and yourself" is coming out January 4, 2022!
Tell us about yourself
I was a school counsellor before violence tore my life apart in 2005. Now I get to be the advocate I needed back then, and I am motivated by all my clients (and my associates) and their hard work to let their lives be shaped by trauma but not controlled by it.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Educating thousands through public speaking, writing, and media, as well as working with individual clients. On the intersection of justice and mental health, empowering everyone to abandon shame and the negative Vs. of victimhood (vulnerable, voiceless, violated) in favour of the positive Vs. (validated, vindicated, vibrant, vocal, and victorious)!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Responding to a constant demand for services and feeling like there is never quite enough of me to go around, or enough time!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- LOVE your work, and it won't feel like work.
- Know that running a business is like having a child--it needs your constant care and attention. It is a long time before it can even start to take care of itself (and you are ALWAYS the parent).
- Self-care and support areas critical as capital!
