Making Immigration Simple - SuperVisas

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in immigration services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joe Chen, Co-Founder of SuperVisas, located in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

SuperVisas is an easy-to-use, low-cost online visa platform designed to guide digital natives through the immigration journey from student or worker to citizenship in Canada or the USA.

Tell us about yourself

I am a first-generation immigrant, and so are many of our team members. I felt the pain of immigration when applying for my Canadian permanent residence - I almost had to leave the country. I understand visas and immigration are very difficult to navigate for most people, regardless of their language proficiency and level of education. Most of us are not experienced enough or do not have the time to research the regulations to best present their applications to governments. I want to make it easy for anyone. That's what got me started SuperVisas.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Because of our business idea, I got through the training and obtained my immigration consultant license in Canada. We have since helped over 200+ applicants with all types of applications: visitor visas, study permits, work permits, employer sponsorships, immigration, and citizenships.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being agile and ready to change. We started running our business at the beginning of COVID. During the past two years, there have been many macro changes that have happened - travel restrictions, government slowing down of visa processing, gradual recovery of travel, high inflation, the current recession, etc. Going through all these changes, we learned the importance of planning ahead and being fiscally conservative as a start-up.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do what you are passionate about if you are just starting or trying to come up with an idea. Starting up a business is a commitment that's five years or longer. If you're not passionate about it, it will feel even longer.
  2. Connect with experienced mentors in your space and listen to their advice so you don't have to learn by making mistakes.
  3. Hire those who share your passion. Skills can be learned, but not passion.
