Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jimmy Daly, Co-Founder and CEO of Superpath, located in Vail, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Superpath is a free community for content marketers. We have several lines of business, including a job board, a paid membership, and a talent marketplace. Our customers are content marketers, specifically content marketing managers, content leads, heads of content, and VPs of content.
Tell us about yourself
I've been working in content marketing for close to 15 years and have always been disappointed with the resources out there for content folks. I created Superpath first as a side project, and as it grew decided to take a chance and see if I could turn it into a real business. We help content marketers navigate their careers, find better jobs, negotiate better salaries, teach them all about content strategy, and help them network. I find that to be incredibly fulfilling and motivating.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think that my biggest accomplishment is that I've been running this business for 2.5 years. And it's profitable and sustainable, and I still enjoy doing it every day.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is that I have such a wide variety of work on my plate each day. Not only do I have to grow the business and keep our existing customers happy, but I also have to handle all of the accounting and sometimes admin work that comes along with running a business. I have to send invoices, manage our tech stack, and manage our team—not to mention keep up with my inbox.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
For me, it was important to start small and make sure I really wanted to spend 40+ hours per week working on this project. I ran it for a year as a side project, and that gave me the confidence to make a much larger time and financial investment. If you're a new entrepreneur, I do not recommend diving into something you don't know much about. Vet closely before making the leap.
