Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sami Kustantini, Owner of Supermoon Brands, Inc., located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Supermoon is a bakery chain that specializes in Japanese cheesecakes and other delicious specialty desserts. Our customers are anyone who enjoys a delicious dessert but is looking for something a little different and easier on the hips!

Tell us about yourself

As foodies, my wife and I always love exploring different cuisines from around the world. When we came across Japanese cheesecakes, we appreciated that they were delicious but also were much less dense and lighter in calories and sugar than the traditional kind most people are accustomed to.

We did not have anything like this where we lived and my wife, being the avid baker that she is, decided to take a stab at making it herself. With the support of family, we launched our first bakery five years ago and have not looked back since. The appreciation and positive feedback we receive from our loyal customers motivate us to keep going!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing our business from a single location to a franchise despite the challenges we faced during the pandemic.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Running a business can be challenging at times. Finding and retaining the right talent or contending with ever-increasing costs can be very difficult to manage. But possibly the hardest thing a business owner has to deal with is not being able to disconnect from the business. It's very different from having a job you can separate yourself from at the end of the day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find something unique - a niche that is underserved, and set yourself apart.
  2. It's great to be invested in your business, but make sure to achieve a healthy work/life balance, so you do not burn yourself out.
  3. Starting a business is no small feat. Take credit for what you're doing and be proud of your accomplishments.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

As a business owner, you will be challenged every day and pushed to your limits regularly. Persevere. The opposite of success is not failure. It's giving up.
