Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in leadership development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Posey, Founder of SUPER*MEGA*BOSS, located in San Jose, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
SUPER*MEGA*BOSS is a training company focused on brain-based soft skills. We create short videos, virtual and in-person training experiences to build better bosses for the new world of work. Our experiences are based on neuroscience and focused on behavior change.
Tell us about yourself
I started SUPER*MEGA*BOSS as an experiment in making business skill training fun and more interesting than what I had experienced when I learned to be a manager. Since people and behavior at work can be really weird, I decided to create training that was also a little weird. It turns out that when we have a more emotional reaction when we learn, we tend to remember it longer and stronger. Corporate life and learning how to manage people can be really stressful and challenging, so learning how to do it well, based on science, motivates me. I want people to enjoy the people management part of their jobs more and be better at it!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Managing cash flow and operating a profitable business in the first year of operating was probably my biggest accomplishment. Being smart in investments in that first year and making decisions around what to outsource or keep in-house helped me use my time well and manage cash flow.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Running a business is both incredibly challenging and rewarding. The people side can be very challenging as you grow, so making sure you align on goals and are clear on how you operate takes time and effort. Don't assume people know what you're thinking--overcommunication, especially at the beginning, is important. Get people on the same page.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Manage your cash flow well, especially if you are bootstrapped. Get a good bookkeeper to help and formalize your financials at the very start.
- Outsource your marketing if it's not your core skill, it's a field that changes so rapidly, and it's a great place to bring in expertise.
- Have a hobby outside of work that you can balance out the stress of running a business. It'll make you healthier and happier (and your brain will thank you!).
