What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a professional speaker. My customers are generally meeting planners that organize events such as conferences, retreats, AGMs, and conventions that are looking for great content delivered in a fun and engaging way.

Tell us about yourself

I love the opportunity to see individuals and groups accomplish amazing things. Too often, people sell themselves short or don't necessarily focus on the "right" things to get them where they want to go in an efficient way. I try and help people and groups find that optimum path.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have been a professional speaker for a little over 28 years and have spoken to over 2000 live audiences and over a million people in person. One of my career highlights was being inducted into the Professional Speakers Hall of Fame (who even knew there was one!!).

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, it's about learning when to turn it off. When you love what you do, you automatically incorporate it into all areas of your life. But there is still a benefit to sometimes just turning off the phone, powering down the computer and doing the Hokey Pokey, and being in the moment.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you love it and aren't doing it just to make money
  2. Try not to reinvent the wheel (find a mentor, do the research and read)
  3. Know your strengths and augment your weaknesses with good hires or contractors.
