Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Savannah Welcher, Founder of Sunflower Essentials, located in Baltimore, MD, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Sunflower Essentials is a natural body care brand. My main clients are families that are looking for a one-stop shop when it comes to their body care. My products are safe and healthy for all ages and skin types. I have eliminated the need to purchase separate "baby" or "sensitive skin products for individual family members.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Savannah Welcher. I am a wife and stay-at-home, homeschooling mom. I founded Sunflower Essentials in 2019 after unsuccessfully being able to properly hydrate my oldest daughter's skin. My baby spent her first 7 months of life with dry, cracked, eczema-patched skin, with relief only coming from using prescription hydrocortisone cream. After picking up her third round of prescriptions, I knew enough was enough. I didn't want to keep putting a chemical steroid on my girl's skin! Finally resolving that I couldn't find a lotion or cream that would help me, I got in the kitchen and began experimenting. After much trial and error, I finally found two shea butter-based recipes that kept my baby girl's skin not only hydrated but it repaired the damage caused by 7 months of inadequate care. After learning about the success of my body butter, friends began asking if I could create more natural versions of products they love purchasing from big stores. My family and friends helped Sunflower Essentials become what it is today!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has to be completely beginning this business! I never had a vision of working for myself. I have no background in creating, business, or marketing, but I am learning and figuring things out as I go. I have gone from being a passive follower who preferred to be a worker in the background to becoming a business owner.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is continuing on when life isn't perfect. I have to wake up every day and choose to make time for the business I decided to create. Some days that is easier said than done.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just START. Even if you don't know everything. Learning as you go is okay!
- Don't compare yourself to anyone. Others may do something similar to you, and it may seem they are doing "better" than you. Keep in mind that you never know the whole story, so just keep doing YOUR best, and your blessings will come from that.
- Get a mentor. Having an expert by your side will help make you better, give you someone to identify with, and it may even open up opportunities you would have missed without them.
