Break Your Sugar Habit - Sugarbreak

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scarlett Leung, co-founder, and CEO of Sugarbreak PBC, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sugar controls too many of us. We are here to help you break free. Now more than ever, we need to take charge of our health. As it stands, 1 in 3 Americans is diabetic or pre-diabetic. The rapid growth of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes in young people is a growing clinical and public health concern. Beyond the inherent challenges that accompany these medical conditions, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the even greater risk facing this population.

Sugarbreak is a natural, non-prescription support system that empowers you to curb your sugar intake and manage your blood sugar levels so you can live your best life.

Our aim is to reverse the increasingly widespread trends of obesity and diabetes, which are the result of rising blood sugar, one person at a time. We exist outside the pharmaceutical complex and work alongside the world's leading scientists and clinicians to provide the research and evidence you deserve. Managing your blood sugar is now Natural, Safe, Effective, & Easy.

Tell us about yourself

Having formerly led a business in fertility, I experienced how I could change people's lives for the better by creating options outside of the traditional healthcare system. A close friend of mine was diagnosed with diabetes, and I realized that despite impacting 1 in 3 Americans, there were no options outside of pharmaceutical drugs or will-power-driven lifestyle changes. I was excited by the potential of creating products that would help people achieve better health and a higher quality of life. The start-up life is tough and is a roller-coaster of emotions. However, whenever I receive a customer's review, email, or post on social media saying how life-changing our products were for them, it makes it all worth it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is creating a great work culture and environment for my team to thrive. I find it extremely fulfilling when my employees tell me that Sugarbreak is the best job they have ever had, and they look forward to coming to work every day. Of course, I think that being the first Blood Sugar Management brand to be created and receive recognition as the anchor brand in large national retailers such as Target and CVS is a dream come true.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that I think many founders share is not to take things personally. The company becomes such an integral part of your identity that every failure feels personal, and many of us beat ourselves up on how things could have been better, even when things are outside of our control.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just do it! The difference between a founder and a non-founder is that the founder decided to take a leap and go for it.
  2. Be really picky with who you bring into your business. Be it, co-founders or investors. These people will be with you for a long time and largely influence the success or failure of your company.
  3. Build your support network! Being a founder is hard, and it's lonely, but surrounding yourself with great people who can support you and understand you will make the journey much easier.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Celebrate the wins! I am still learning to do this as well, but I think many of us focus a lot on what can be improved every day and forget to celebrate when good things happen.
