What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Sugar Rush Columbus in Reynoldsburg, OH. We specialize in custom desserts, including wedding, birthday, and anniversary cakes. Our creations can be as basic or as unique and bizarre as someone would like. We also have a storefront location with display cases full of cookies, cakes, cupcakes, and more for customers to walk in and purchase.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Amanda, and I am the proud woman-owned Sugar Rush Columbus business owner. I have been married for 12 years to my amazing husband, and we have two beautiful children, Ezra and Eyla. Believe it or not, my business started by accident. My family and I were invited to a potluck-style 4th of July party in 2018, and I decided to take a cake. At this time, I had never baked anything in my life, but I made a cake, and people loved it. From there, I formed a Facebook page for family and friends to buy cakes from, and word of mouth grew my little business. Working corporate world at the time, I would go to my regular job and then come home and bake cakes out of my house. That quickly grew, and I made an agreement to rent out kitchen space at a local pizza shop when they closed at night. After a year of doing that, I decided it was time to open up my own shop, and I opened up my first location in 2020. My motivation every day is my team. I have a team of full-time and part-time employees that depend on the business's success.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to leave the corporate world and being able to grow my own team and business.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The stress. As a business owner, I have learned that there are busy and slow months. During the slow months, I still have an overhead that needs to be paid.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a great staff.
- Have a great product that can fill a need.
- Have a love for what you do.
