Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ora Daniels, owner of Sugar Innovations, located in Cincinnati, OH, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I specialize in candied apples and treats. I'm known for my custom work. I sell at markets and events all over Cincinnati. This has allowed me to serve customers from all walks of life. My customers have become family. They reach out for weddings, birthday parties, baby showers, and all types of special events. I appreciate them for trusting me with their special days!
Tell us about yourself
I'm a Cincinnati native, a wife, and a mother of four. I worked in corporate America for 15+ years in many different industries. I always had some sort of leadership/ management position, which at the time, I had no idea I was grooming myself for entrepreneurship. This entrepreneurial journey began in 2014; I hosted a charity event and needed a favor for the tables. Our theme was the circus, so I thought about something that would match the theme. I researched and found these really pretty purple apples, which exactly matched our theme and made 70-80 for the tables. People began requesting apples and treats for parties and events. I love what I do; although sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming, I wouldn't have it any other way!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've increased my capacity, which wasn't easy. I've produced thousands of treats for corporate customers, hospitals, and large events. This has opened my business up to lots of opportunities!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
You are juggling everything. Your business, family, friends, and personal well-being. It can be a bit taxing. If you take the proper steps, eventually, the company will run itself. Until that day, roll up your sleeves and get to work. It will definitely pay off in the end!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Build your financial house before you leave you 9-5 (i.e., credit, savings). Finding funding can be hard. It's a lot easier if your finances are in order.
- Grow your network; a strong network will present opportunities.
- Ask for help! We tend to want to do everything ourselves. Then we become overwhelmed. Delegate and focus on the task you can't give away!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Customer service and human connections are dying. Implement ways to stay connected and make sure every sales experience feels personal. I hate when someone is taking my money but doesn't say, "Hi, how are you!" "Thank you" normal courtesies can go a long way!
