What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is focused on recreating tastes from your past, recreating treats with a sense of nostalgia. I look to make food that brings back memories but is made with far superior ingredients to make someone happy with something I have created is why I am in this completely.
Tell us about yourself
Starting my own baking business has always been a dream, but life had other plans for me. I am a mom; I was running my house along with waitressing three jobs there was just no time. Cut to COVID shut down, and I was finally able to sit down and realize I could absolutely do it. The amazing support from my family and friends was why I was able to do this. But the greatest part of all of it was I was finally able to spend more time with my kids. Instead of being at work all the time, I was able to be home so much more and also able to bring them with me. My children are why I do everything I do, and now they can be a part of it with me, and I know I have made the right choice.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I don't have a particular marker that I define as an outstanding accomplishment, but every time I have a repeat customer, someone recommends me to another, or being told that something I made was the best dessert they ever had is the best feeling in the world and never gets old. I get giddy every time.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing for sure is to step out of my comfort zone. I have an amazing support system, but I am running this business on my own every day. But every single time I have pushed myself to try something new, it has paid off leaps and bounds. Whether it is being asked to do a live cooking demo on the Rhode show (twice, no big deal) or making an amazing contact that has paid off later on. Making myself put on my big girl pants and walk in like I belong no matter how I feel inside has been the hardest and most rewarding part of being a business owner.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- I would say you do not compare yourself to others doing similar things around you. Keep your head up AND DO BETTER! that is the best bit of advice I was given.
- Make every single event, fair, or meeting worth it, network, make friends with other business people around you, and form a support system who you surround yourself with will shape your path. If you hang out with like-minded, driven business people, they will help drive you.
- Just do it!! So cliché, but just do it. One step at a time if you have to. Start a webpage, get your licensing, find out how you will do your business ….. baby steps to check off your list, and eventually, you will get there.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I am excited to move into the next phase of my business. You can find my product along with my usual orders, farmer's markets, and spots. I am going to start teaching cake decorating classes, baking workshops, and such. It has been a whirlwind of a year, and I am beyond thankful for everyone who has been there along the way.
