Holistic Design for Wellbeing - Studio Mae
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in home care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Liz Linforth, Co-Founder of Studio Mae, located in Sydney, NSW, Australia.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are an interior design firm specialising in designing spaces for well-being. We lead our clients to mindful interiors that enhance well-being through connection to natural elements, materials, and textiles. Using proven design treatments, we produce calm, nurturing spaces that are sustainable, healthy, timeless, and beautiful.
We work with people and brands who live and breathe wellness and who understand what it means to integrate health, well-being, and environmental care into every aspect of our lives.
Tell us about yourself
I met my co-founder (Mima) while working at an Architecture firm in London, and we quickly bonded over our two passions, interiors and well-being. This was the core motivation for establishing Studio Mae in Dec 2018. Four years later, we are still driven and passionate about elevating a space from an aesthetically beautiful one to an interior that affects people on a much deeper psychological level. Seeing the well-being of our clients improve through beautifully healthy and sustainable interiors is all the daily motivation we need.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
This year we were thrilled that our commitment to conscious design had been recognised in our industry through renowned awards, including Designer of the Year, for our Butter House project in Notting Hill, London.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Everything is a fine balancing act. Whether it is balancing the needs of the business with our family needs or efficiently carving our time between designing for projects or looking after the back-of-house administrative tasks that come with running a business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have savings or good cash flow so that you can effectively grow your business.
- Find out the best marketing channel for reaching your ideal client
this could be social for some businesses but for others; it will be face-to-face networking. Don't waste your time or money on the areas that don't bring you, customers because you see everyone else there. - Avoid burnout by listening to your body. If you are feeling run down or stressed, take the afternoon or day off to recalibrate. Often as a business owner, there is constant guilt about not working hard enough. It is equally as important, though, to restore; often, this is when the best ideas come!
